...contempt. Contempt.
It was a feeling that Kennes was intimately familiar with - her own feelings for herself were nothing but that unfortunate emotion - but to feel it coming from someone who wasn't her, from someone who had entered her head in order to show her how thorougly it disdained her...no. That was wrong. It was trying to hurt her, going through her head just so it could hurt her. And the ferocious resentment when she finally pulled her mind away...
"You're not getting any more from me," she murmured, scowling at the egg.
...She was still half-crouched. Faranth, she had forgotten to stand up. Grimacing in embarrassment, Kennes finally got to her feet, still shaking slightly. The first two eggs must have been a fluke, if this was what the rest of the clutch was like. "I don't want to do this anymore," she muttered, but this was...it was possible this was her only chance to prove herself. If she failed here, they probably wouldn't let her back near dragons again. She brushed sand rather self-consciously off the backs of her legs and shook her head. Time to touch another egg.
Someone else was leaving the Sands. Kennes watched anxiously for a moment, but she wasn't surprised. This clutch seemed...wrong. Very wrong. Taking a deep breath, the teenage Candidate rubbed the back of her neck and picked another egg at random. The Deadly Purity egg, shining wetly in the dim light of the cavern, seemed as good as any, and Kennes approached it suspiciously, brushing her fingers suspiciously against its shell.
