PLOT:
- For
a long time the horrors of Thread bound the planet of Pern together.
United by a common cause the world’s dragonriders protected the lands
and Holds and people with their flame – sometimes even with their lives.
When AIVAS technology was discovered and Thread brought to an end, many
thought it was the start of a new, better era. One where Pern and its
people could move forward into a more hospitable future.
They were wrong.
In
a truly unfortunate stroke of bad luck two things happened at once. A
poor harvest left not enough resources to go around and the price of
food skyrocketed, causing widespread famine. Soon after the effects were
felt, an angry mob, superstitious and hungry, destroyed AIVAS and key
crafthalls, blaming the new technology for their recent misfortune. Not
only did this cost Pern valuable knowledge, but it set the stage for the
world we know today. Weyrs were expensive to feed even during a good
season and now suddenly things were dire. In a fit of desperation major
Weyrs and the Holds under their protection united. The Holds provided
food for the Weyr and with the absence of Thread the Weyr found a new
use – protecting the Hold’s food stores and wildlife from raiders and
leading raiding parties into other Hold’s territories in turn.
This time would ironically become known as the War of Feasting.
Over
time these small opposing forces merged with surrounding territories to
form four separate political states. Nyris to the West ruled by Fort,
Angris in center of the Northern Continent ruled by Telgar, Erris to the
East ruled by Benden, while the Southern Continent remained a separate
political body. Though these states varied wildly in terms of climate,
resources, and politics they had one thing in common: war. Once the
world had a taste of war it was hard to forget it. Turns passed and
harvests grew better but the four states still found excuses to fight.
Weyrs and major Holds became increasingly militarized, and technological
advances that would have once gone toward new crafts were instead
focused on perfecting weapons of war.
Different wars come and go,
and Pern now finds itself in a time of uneasy peace. The states are
licking their wounds and recovering from the war that ended only three
turns prior, each side eyeing their enemies with equal distrust. During
the last war, the Starstones War, the daughter of Nyris’ king was
kidnapped by enemy state Erris and put before a Benden clutch where she
Impressed a Gold. After the end of the war Nyris was in no position to
demand her return, but now, three turns later, the woman and her queen
have returned to Fort Weyr of their own accord – supposedly. Many in
Nyris suspect that she was purposefully sent back as a spy while at the
same time Erris is stung from having lost one of their weyrwomen in a
way that leaves the peace more fragile than ever.
