The Story So Far...[/align]
The last 10 years of the Ninth Pass was a harrowing time for Pern. Thread fell twice as thickly for unknown reasons, and casualties soared. Still, the Weyrs persevered and managed to to keep their world thread free, making it to the interval by the skin of their teeth. The dragon population was decimated by their epic battle against the ancient menace, and even a century later they are still critically undermanned. Still, they had time to gather their strength before the next pass...or so they thought.
While the average interval is 200 years, and the one previous was over twice as long at nearly 450 years, the Red Star seemed determined to make up for it's previous absence by bringing the scourge of thread back after only 100 years of peace on Pern. Dragonkind has yet to recoup it's losses from the previous pass, and all the Weyrs are scrambling to put enough wings in the air to protect the ever expanding holds and settlements in the North.
In the mean time, the Southern continent was not bothered over-much after the initial surprise of threadfall. Over the course of the last century, dragonriders had spread out across the continent, forming small weyrholds where they and theirs could live with their dragons. In the process, Monaco Bay Weyr was abandoned, leaving Southern as the only major Weyr on the Southern Continent. These Weyrholds became self-sufficient and both Northern and Southern dragonriders took up crafts during the interval. All dragons belonging to Weyrholds in the south, though, owed final allegiance to Southern Weyr, and when Thread began to fall once more, the Weyrleaders called them in.
The Southern Continent, being well grubbed, needed few dragonriders for protection. People had quickly gotten used to getting under cover on days when Thread was expected, and riders fought thread only over young crops and a few other vital areas. That being the case, the Southern Weyrleaders declared that they would be sending the bulk of the riders from the Southern Continent to form a new Weyr in the North to help bolster the northern forces in their fight against thread.
Needless to say, many of the riders did not wish to leave the homes their parents and grandparents had worked so hard to build and make prosper, so the Weyrleaders added the stipulation that riders who ran Weyrholds were allowed to return to them when thread was not imminent in the north. A new Weyr would still be formed, though, as a centralized area for riders to rally was important, not to mention a Queen needed a hatching ground where candidates could come and impress her precious offspring. These new riders would, then, need a place to live, and Southern Weyr would return to it's former days as a place for the injured to recuperate before returning to their duties in the North.
Amongst the contingent of riders that Southern Weyr sent North was their youngest Queen and her rider, the result of the only queen egg that Southern Weyr's Senior Queen had laid in some years. They were not the only Weyr with a single Queen in residence, for only a few had two, and none had three. This young Queen's maiden flight would determine the leadership of the new Weyr, which had been dubbed 'Starfall Weyr', with her rider as Weyrwoman. It was hoped that both she, and the other Queens, would begin producing more golden eggs to insure the survival of the species.
In less than a six-month after the decision had been made, Starfall Weyr was fully operational and ready for it's new residents. It was located far to the north in the mountains between Bitra and Lemos holds. There was a crater there with a few large caves to serve as the Weyr, and everything else the Dragonriders would need was forged from the mountain using the steam powered technology that had been developed over the last century. Thanks to these recent advances, it was even well heated, with several lifts that could take people from level to level. As it was so new, it was one of the most technologically advanced Weyrs, having all the latest commodities to make life that much easier.
Only a week after moving in, Gold Iatath was flown by Bronze Y'voth, officially making Oleanna Weyrwoman, and V'len her Weyrleader.
